New OSHA Hazard Communication Standard
Employee training deadline: December 1, 2013

logo-OSHAOSHA revised its Hazard Communication Standard (HCS). According to OSHA, “The new label elements and SDS requirements will improve worker understanding of the hazards associated with the chemicals in their workplace.” Requirements are being phased in over several years (Dec. 13, 2013 – June 1, 2016).

Two significant changes are:
1. Use of new labeling elements; and
2. Standardized format for Safety Data Sheets (SDSs)
   Formally known as Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs)


DEADLINE: DECEMBER 1, 2013

EMPLOYERS:

Train employees on new label elements and new Safety Data Sheet format.

DEADLINE: DECEMBER 1, 2015

MANUFACTURERS, IMPORTERS, DISTRIBUTORS:

Compliance with all modified provisions of this final rule, except the Distributor shall not ship containers labeled by the chemical manufacturer or exporter unless it is a GHS label.
